Help Our Cemetery Workers Keep Their Jobs

On September 1, 2011 the same day that our contract expired with the St. Mary – St. Agnes Cemeteries, Archbishop Dolan of New York posted his Labor Day message online.  To read the post, please click here.

The hypocrisy revealed when we compare the inspiring positive message of the Archbishop with the real facts on the ground at St. Mary -- St. Agnes is staggering.  Please take a few minutes in the next few days and post a response to Archbishop Dolan’s message. This struggle is far from over.

To learn more about this struggle, please click here and read the article that appeared in the Syracuse Post Standard just a few weeks ago.

Thank you,
Jerry Dennis, President

Bishop Cunningham: Where is the justice for our cemetery workers?

The Syracuse Diocese is planning to “restructure” the St. Mary’s - St. Agnes Cemeteries Corporation and layoff all six workers.

“If there’s a loss of unions, then there’ll be no (balance) of power.” —Bishop Frank Harrison

These workers, with an average of 20 years on the job, earning a modest $32,000 per year, are middle aged family men with little hope of finding new employment.

“[This] move callously disregards concern for longtime, loyal workers who do back-breaking, sometimes grim work. It also illustrates a high-handed ‘do as I say, not as I do’ hypocrisy.” —Syracuse Post Standard Editorial Board

There is no reason for a profitable cemetery business to restructure except to get rid of a moderately paid ageing workforce — to bust their Union.

“...workers’ rights cannot be doomed to be the mere result of economic systems aimed at maximum profits. The thing that must shape the whole economy is respect for the workers’ rights.” —Pope John Paul II

If you care about the injustice these workers face, call Bishop Robert J. Cunningham at (315) 422-7203 and ask him: why have you forsaken these workers?

Study: Deunionization A Leading Factor Behind Increasing Income Inequality

ThinkProgress

ThinkProgress has released a new report, confirming what we've known about the benefits of unionization:
  • Nonunion workers benefit from unionization, as employers raise wages and increase employee benefits.
  • Unions have helped "institutionalize the norms of equity" - working so that people know they deserve fair pay and benefits.
  • As union membership decreases, the middle class shrinks, and income inequities increase.

It's time to fight for fair wages and benefits for people all over this country! Join a union!

The Truth About The Economy In 2 Minutes

Former Labor Secretary Robert Reich said he could explain the problems with the economy in less than 2 minutes, 15 seconds—and he did it (with illustrations to boot). Take two minutes and watch the video!

NLRB Proposes New Rules

Today, the NLRB issued proposed changes that are a step in the right direction for workers.  This rule change simply restores a measure of basic worker rights.  As it stands, most workers who want to form a union will never get the chance. The current rules allow employers to drag out the process for months – in some cases years – while they wage a campaign in the workplace to mislead and intimidate their employees.

The proposed rules will no longer allow employers to drag out the election process through costly litigation and other delay tactics. Workers need the right to a fair and timely election when they choose to form a union, and this rules change will allow for just that.

For a full-text article by the New York Times, click here.

SEIU members all over the country are signing a petition thanking the NLRB for their protection of worker's rights, can you take a moment to sign it? Click here to become one of the thousands of members nationwide who are saying "Thank you" to the NLRB.
